Camden Libraries - Rhyme Time Sessions
Regents Park Time Bank (RPTB) partnered with Camden Libraries’ development team to bring Rhyme Time sessions to the local estate as part of our school holiday family activities program. Years ago, the estate was home to its own branch library, a valued community resource that was unfortunately closed due to early austerity measures.
In Summer 2024, library staff delivered a series of weekly Rhyme Time workshops, offering a unique opportunity to promote Camden Libraries’ services and highlight the importance of parents reading to their children to support literacy and improve reading standards.
This year, RPTB aimed to provide more structured learning and social opportunities for children under five, encouraging parents to read to their little ones while fostering a space for children to learn and make music together. Camden’s libraries development team supported this goal by providing an outreach worker who delivered weekly Rhyme Time sessions on Tuesday mornings. These sessions also encouraged families to sign up for local library services and activities.
This initiative marked a new area of outreach work for Camden’s team, but it also held a nostalgic connection for RPTB. In our early days, we ran workshops in a purpose-built branch library situated on the estate. Its closure due to austerity measures was a significant loss to the local community, making the return of library outreach an especially meaningful development.
Working Men’s College - Kids in the Kitchen
During Summer 2024, we hosted a two-day EWPL Parent & Child Healthy Eating course aimed at encouraging parents to prepare healthier meals at home while involving their children in activities like weighing, measuring, and learning about nutritious eating. The course was designed to raise awareness about healthy cooking and inspire parents to upskill by pursuing formal qualifications, such as a maths course at WM College.
The ultimate goal was to help parents acquire essential life skills, enabling them to assist their children with homework and develop a stronger foundation for family wellbeing. The course was incredibly popular, with 31 participants (19 children and 12 parents) enrolling. Every participant successfully completed the course and received a certificate, which was proudly presented by Peter Whitehead, Head of Department at WM College.
One remarkable aspect of this course was the participation of several fathers, a rare occurrence according to WM College. The success of the program also provided an opportunity to encourage adult participants to enrol in additional community learning courses at the start of the new Autumn Term, ensuring the positive momentum continued beyond the summer.
The Postal Museum – Crafts Workshops
Regents Park Time Bank (RPTB) has had a strong relationship with The Postal Museum since its inception several years ago. The museum has hosted numerous visits from our families during school holidays, each one offering an exciting and engaging experience.
Workshops have featured a variety of creative themes, including card-making, dressing up in historic postman uniforms, and even special seasonal sessions held at our Centre. These seasonal workshops have allowed children to craft unique Christmas gifts for their parents and friends, fostering creativity and thoughtfulness.
The highlight of every visit, however, is undoubtedly the thrilling ride on the museum’s famous underground mail train—a memorable experience that never fails to delight both children and adults alike.
