Summer Programme Newsletter – 31st July 2026

Children at the launch of the Summer Reading Challenge 2026 at Dick Collins Hall

Welcome to our Summer Programme newsletter, covering 21st to 30th July 2026. 107 residents, including 61 children, took part in our first day of activities on Tuesday 21st July – including the launch of the Summer Reading Challenge!

Launch of our Summer Reading Challenge 2026

Children were invited to register online as new Camden Library members and to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge – reading 6 books in 6 weeks! Local author Anne John-Ligali read from her book Chaos at the Carnival, followed by a Carnival mask-making workshop. Clara, the Camden Town Library manager, kindly came along to help us.

Over 30 free reading bags were given out, containing illustrated reading and colouring books.

Tales with Tracy

Six weeks of fabulous and highly engaging stories! Tracy read and created activities around these stories:

  • We’re Going on a Bear Hunt – make your own family stick puppets and some binoculars. Each child gets a soft bear, and each family gets a copy of the book.
  • Through My Window – draw what you see out of your window, design your dream view from a window, and look at props from the 80s.

A big thank you to The Toy Project, who donated 45 teddy bears.

Chinese Stories Arts & Crafts

Traditional Chinese children’s stories and paper flower-making. The Pony Crosses the River was read by Ms Yue Jin and Siew Kit Lee, with children making the noises and sounds as the story went along. This was followed by a fabulous, colourful paper flower-making workshop, where children created a bouquet to take home.

Family Multi-Sports with Coach Marcel

Every Tuesday morning, 10am to 1pm.

Funky Fashion

58 residents, including 41 children, took part. It was a wonderful day where children created funky fashion and robots out of junk, overseen by Helen from Cut Moose and our volunteers. We had tasty spaghetti Bolognese and salad, followed by watermelon – and not forgetting Family Bingo!

Science Owl workshops

Two hands-on workshops from Science Owl:

  • The Broken Umbrella Challenge – children take things apart, experiment and design something completely new.
  • Once Upon an Invention – children become engineers on a mission to design, build and test a robot boat that can catch plastic from the sea.
